How to Dispose of a Mattress in Rutherford County, TN
A mattress is one of the trickiest things to get rid of legally around here. This guide covers the county’s own rules for its convenience centers — the charge, the limits, and the hours — and when it makes more sense to have it picked up.
Option 1: Take it to a county convenience center
Rutherford County runs convenience centers where residents can drop off mattresses themselves. Mattresses count as bulk items, and the county charges $20 per mattress for disposal. Before you load up, these are the rules that trip people up:
- Residents only — the centers are for Rutherford County residential use, and commercial waste is not allowed
- Maximum 3 bulk items per day (a mattress, a couch, and a chair would use the whole day’s limit), one visit per day
- No bulk items on Sundays — household garbage only; centers are closed Monday and Thursday
- Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9:30 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday 7:30 AM–3:00 PM
- The open-top containers stand about six feet tall — bring help if you can’t lift a mattress overhead
- Trailers up to 10 feet are allowed; no box trucks, no construction or demolition debris
Centers that commonly serve our area include the Smyrna Convenience Center (112 G Street, Smyrna), the Leanna Convenience Center (4303 Sulphur Springs Road, Murfreesboro), and the Rockvale Convenience Center (9002 Rockvale Road, Rockvale). The county keeps the full list, holiday closures, and a location map on its official recycling & convenience center page — check it before you go, since hours and closures can change.
One thing worth knowing: out of all the bedding that gets tossed in Middle Tennessee, the county reports an estimated 20–30 mattresses a week are dumped illegally. If a mattress turns up improperly disposed of, the county tracks down who left it. A roadside or behind-a-dumpster drop-off is a bad day that turns expensive — and it is exactly what convenience centers and pickup services exist to avoid.
Option 2: Have it picked up
If the mattress is upstairs, you don’t have a truck or trailer, you’re turning a rental on a deadline, or the count runs past three at a time, pickup is usually the better trade. We load it from wherever it sits, haul it to proper disposal facilities, and can take frames and box springs in the same trip.
